Transforming Chang Moi Buildings Explore Creative Sites at CMDW 2023

As the theme of Chiang Mai Design Week 2023, the concept of ‘TRANSFORMING LOCAL: Adapt / Enhance / Local / Grow’ not only represents the process of transforming and elevating Chiang Mai’s cultural heritages through collaborations between different generations of designers, but the notion itself is also reflected in the venues of the events. Especially in the Chang Moi area, where old buildings long overlooked by passersby have been transformed into spaces infused with the fresh air of creativity and inspiration. What’s there to explore in this neighborhood? Here are some highlights for you to check out:Chang Moi: Old Commercial Neighborhood with a New LifeThe Chang Moi area is situated to the east of Chiang Mai Old City, on the road connecting the square moat’s road with Warorot Market and the Ping River. As one of the city’s most prominent old commercial centers, the neighborhood is filled with charming structures that have been standing here for more than 50 years. With urban expansion toward the outskirts of the city, the old city center lost its bustle and liveliness that it once saw in its heyday. However, in the last 3-4 years, the younger generations of entrepreneurs saw the potential of modern business around the Old City, reviving Chang Moi as a fine blend of existing businesses and emerging ones. Mantana Building: From Timber Warehouse to Creative Space in the Heart of the NeighborhoodSituated at the heart of Chang Moi’s commercial center, the Mantana Building was once an office and one of the city’s first timber warehouses. Now, it serves as a space for hosting creative events organized by the younger generation of artists and entrepreneurs. During the upcoming festive season, the building will house the Upper Floor Project Exhibition, which explores the possibilities of utilizing the mostly unused upper floors of commercial buildings. This will be achieved through various activities, including showcases that tell the history of buildings in the neighborhood, workshops, rooftop movie screenings, live music, and even fortune-telling!In addition to that, there is the Persona of Things Exhibition, which seeks to shift the focus from merely renovating old buildings to creatively reviving and reinterpreting objects. It highlights the process of adopting artisanal handicraft skills to repair or repurpose used or damaged items, infusing them with new ideas and added worth and values, all while preserving the priceless histories behind those objects.Tokki: International Showcase inside an Izakaya BarNot too far from the Mantana Building on Chaiyaphoom Soi 1 (in front of Chomphoo Temple), you’ll find Tokki Izakaya Bar, a Japanese restaurant that has played a role in reviving Chang Moi. During the festival, the bar will host the International Showcase, presenting works by designers from Japan, Taiwan, and Laos, with the aim of igniting inspiration for Chiang Mai locals.Thana-Arkarn Building: Making an Old Bank Building Shine Bright with IdeasThana-Akarn is a 3-storey building with a stylish façade, reflecting a legacy of modern architecture popular in Thailand several decades ago. The building used to house a well-known commercial bank on Ratchawong Road. After the branch closed down, visionary entrepreneurs took over the space with plans to transform it into a mixed-use area.During the festival, Thana-Akarn is the host of several highlights, including the Sound Moment Exhibition by Wittaya Chanma—an interactive exhibition that combines video with sound from vinyl, resulting in experimental vinyl animation generated using the ‘afterimage’ technique. There’s also the Flavourscape Exhibition, another interactive exhibition that raises questions about the relationship between food and people in various geographic landscapes. Additionally, The Haunted House, created by students from the College of Art, Media, and Technology in collaboration with the Faculty of Science at Chiang Mai University, incorporates AR technology to create a haunted house, providing a unique experience that is both fun and frightening simultaneously.Sri Lanna Thai Women’s Culture Promotion Association Building: Creative Activities for KidsThe last stop is at the Sri Lanna Thai Women’s Culture Promotion Association Building, located at the same venue as TCDC Chiang Mai. The space will host several creative kids’ programs, including children’s stage plays, storytelling activities, and more. Moreover, the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) will offer an extraordinary experience with a solar system model exhibition called Glow in the Dark Exhibition, creating a miniature planetarium with free admission throughout the week.Check in with Convenience with Trams Connecting Every Neighborhood in the FestivalYou can easily navigate and check in at all these programs offered during the festival at different venues with the convenience of a tram service that connects the main event areas, including Chiang Mai Old City, Chang Moi-Tha Pae, and other neighborhoods. The trams will shuttle between each neighborhood, departing every 60 minutes. Alternatively, exploring on foot is also a great option as the venues are not too far from each other. This provides an excellent opportunity for sightseeing around the town, enjoying light and sound shows, and experiencing performances along the streets.Explore the creative routes in the process of transformation, breathing new life and spirit into an old neighborhood during Chiang Mai Design Week 2023, which takes place between December 2 and 10, 2023. See you around!

Explore Hidden Corners at Chiang Mai Design Week 2023

While Chiang Mai boasts iconic locations and stunning temples, some lesser-known corners often go unnoticed, lacking notable stories. For Chiang Mai Design Week 2023, we’ve partnered with creators to unveil these ‘hidden corners’ in the Chang Moi neighborhood. Embracing the Transforming Local concept, merging old and new creative forces, we’ll showcase digital art, breathing life into overlooked areas with unique narratives. These revitalized corners offer a ‘shortcut,’ guiding guests through the city’s historic communities and various district showcases. Join us in discovering the intriguing stories hidden in these secret corners.Arch Entrance at Wat Chompu (Pagoda Local) : Projection Mapping by Kor.Bor.Vor Visual LabelMany Chiang Mai residents know that the pagoda of Wat Chompu, in the Chang Moi area, was twinned with that of the Phra That Doi Suthep’s pagoda, so that Lanna people could pay homage to Phra That Doi Suthep without having to scale the mountain. Another ancient site that many people may overlook due to familiarity is the arch entrance or “Pratu Khong”, on the north side of the temple, constructed in an ancient Lanna style more than 500 years ago. The later development of the city meant the overcrowded houses built around the temple have drowned out the majesty of this arch. The arch entrance at Wat Chompu is considered another secret corner by the modern multimedia artist group and creators of many cool site-specific mixed-media works, Kor.bor.Vor. Visual Label, who will apply projection mapping to supplement the beauty of the transforming arch, a landmark overlooked by many, to be vivified with a contemporary story once again.Red Bridge over Mae Kha Canal (The Connection Bridge) : Projection Mapping by Kor.Bor.Vor Visual Label Close by, in the Chang Moi community, is “Saphan Daeng,” a small red bridge over Mae Kha Canal. This bridge has been used for decades by the community as a shortcut, connecting the Wat Chompu area to Ratchawong Road. For the first time, during Chiang Mai Design Week 2023, we would like to use this bridge as an additional route for accessing the event while exploring the community. The Kor.bor.Vor. Visual Label team has created digital art to enliven the area around the bridge, transforming it from yet another ‘passing way’ into a chic check-in point. Don’t miss this—stop by for a visit!Five shophouses (Original Five) : Projection Mapping by Kor.Bor.Vor Visual Label On Ratchawong Road, Soi 3, we have a venue known as the “five shophouses.” These five commercial shophouses exemplify early-modern architecture in this historic commercial area. They are currently undergoing transformation to stimulate new business as the area grows. The Kor.bor.Vor. The Visual Label team has seized the opportunity to use these buildings as a venue to showcase animations depicting the development of the Chang Moi area.Thana-Arkarn (Pern-San-Chan) : Projection Mapping by Decide KitFinishing at Thana-Arkarn Building, the former location of a famous commercial bank in the area, the façade of this building features lines resembling ears of rice. This not only signifies the identity of the said bank but also represents the city’s beautiful modern architectural heritage. Alongside a captivating showcase inside and in front of the building, the artist group Decide Kit, known for numerous innovative light-color-sound projects, is responsible for projection mapping to narrate the story and identity of this contemporary neighborhood, overlaying the character of the building with an interesting twist. These are some of the ‘hidden corners’ being revitalized with new creative ideas by artist groups. What will be their story of transformation? What kind of stylish work will be seen? We will soon reveal.

Let’s Re-Alive and Style Folk Crafts

Let’s Re-Alive and Style Folk Crafts ‘Everyday Contem’ Exhibition at TCDC Chiang MaiFolk crafts are more than just utensils; they embody the lifestyle, culture, and soul of both creators and users. However, as time passes and social values evolve, the precious wisdom of craftsmanship is gradually fading away.Co-organized by TCDC Chiang Mai, the Japan Foundation and MUJI, The ‘Everyday Contem’ Exhibition aims to align traditional handicrafts from Chiang Mai and northern Thailand with contemporary lifestyles. The exhibition explores case studies from countries like Japan, where traditional crafts have successfully integrated with the creative industry. It begins with Mingei, a movement and ideology dating back to the 1920s that celebrated the beauty inherent in everyday, ordinary, and functional objects. The showcase then traces the development of Mingu, representing everyday craft utensils from the Showa era, eventually leading to the creation of the world-famous brand, MUJI.In addition to showcasing objects and creative ideas from Japan, the exhibition returns to Chiang Mai’s roots by presenting collaborative works of young homecoming creators with master craftsmen from various artistic disciplines. This showcase highlights the collaborative efforts of two generations of creators striving to revitalize traditional folk crafts with a contemporary touch.Indulge in the evolution of craftsmanship to the creative industry of Japan and experience the fresh ideas of collaborative creators from Chiang Mai and northern Thailand at the ‘Everyday Contem’ Exhibition, the highlight of Chiang Mai Design Week 2023, hosted at TCDC Chiang Mai (Exhibition Room, Floor 1) from December 2nd to 10th, 2023. Discover how folk crafts can be both chic and contemporary.
