Hantu Tetek: All-Female Shadow Puppet Show
Hantu Tetek: All-Female Shadow Puppet Show
On December 7 and 8 at Kalm Village, the group will present a leather shadow puppet performance that highlights female ghost figures often present but rarely explored from a feminine perspective in Southeast Asian folklore. These stories examine cultural themes like gender, motherhood, resilience, and the exploitation of nature—issues that resonate not just regionally but globally.
The all-female Nang Talung team includes a Malaysian puppeteer, an Indonesian-Dutch singer-songwriter, a Malaysian vinyl DJ, a Malaysian music producer, a co-producer from Myanmar, a Thai traditional instrumentalist, poet, and fire dancer. Our production will feature a blend of traditional tunes with modern compositions, including electronic music. Musicians from different cultural backgrounds will collaborate to create a unique, cross-cultural soundscape.
