SCALING LOCAL: Creativity, Technology and Sustainability
Chiang Mai Design Week is an annual festival where creative professionals and entrepreneurs from northern Thailand collaborate with the Creative Economy Agency (CEA) Chiang Mai to showcase innovative design solutions addressing people’s lifestyles. The festival invites domestic and international creatives to exchange ideas, share knowledge, and exhibit their work.
Beyond fostering professional networks to enhance the creative economy and improve lives, the festival serves as a platform for collaboration addressing challenges like air pollution, economic recession, and inequality. It also aims to find solutions to critical global issues such as aging populations and global warming.
This year’s theme, “Scaling Local: Creativity, Technology, and Sustainability,” focuses on strengthening collaboration among local creatives and entrepreneurs for a positive and sustainable global impact. It’s structured around three pillars to address current and future challenges.
The first pillar, “Creativity,” highlights the northern region’s rich creative resources, cultivated over centuries through art, culture, and aesthetic sensibilities. The festival encourages exploring, reflecting upon, and leveraging these assets with modern tools to expand opportunities and enhance local value.
The second pillar, “Technology,” unlocks the practical potential of the region’s assets. Technology is seen as essential for enhancing human life and driving innovation to address global challenges. This pillar aims to connect Chiang Mai and the northern region’s capabilities, stimulating economic growth and gaining international recognition.
The final pillar, “Sustainability,” represents the festival’s ultimate goal. It encompasses efforts by local creatives, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders to build upon creativity and technology. Sustainable practices will be integrated throughout the festival, including recycling, upcycling, developing human potential, and creating long-term, practical structures.
Throughout the nine-day festival in Chiang Mai, all three pillars will be emphasized across exhibitions, talks, workshops, art activities, performances, film showcases, music, and business matchings. These pillars reinforce the festival’s enduring principles, which have guided the event for the past decade.
We believe true sustainability stems from collective capabilities. Join us in celebrating creativity, exploring innovation, and igniting Chiang Mai’s creative industry globally at Chiang Mai Design Week 2024, themed “Scaling Local: Creativity, Technology, and Sustainability – For Reviving Recovery” from December 7 to 15, 2024, in Chiang Mai.
