CHOEI
CHOEI [เชย – outdated] is a decor that blurs the line between the everyday mundane, mass produced objects with handmade-designed elements through materials and process. A blend of an antique chinese stool commonly found in most Thai-Chinese households with a mass produced plastic stool commonly found on the curbside stalls.
In the early 2000s, a Taiwanese grandfather designed a PVC stool inspired by a wooden Chinese table set but the stool did not sell well. Drawn to its kitschy but delicate Chinese motifs pattern, we were inspired to recreate CHOEI by repurposing the existing mould. The remake of Choei means replacing PVC with a more sustainable PCR (post consumer recycled) polypropylene. In place of the traditional mass plastic production, we hand poured recycled PP compounds of different colours - embracing the spontaneity of the uncontrolled process - resulting in each stool owning a marble-like individual aesthetic of colour and pattern.
From a mass produced Chinese motif stool with cultural references to a Thai-Chinese family, CHOEI is easily relatable and brings up feelings of nostalgia. An old outdated design, reproduced and represented in new ways with new materials - from a mass produced to a unique one off-decor - while still keeping that reference and connection to its original inspiration from an antique chinese table set. CHOEI blurs the line between the kitsch and mundane everyday aesthetic while aiming to create a timeless design with cultural references to Thai-Chinese migration history.
The process of CHOEI in the making pushes and expands the boundary of mass production with added handmade elements in the plastic industry. CHOEI plays around with the traditional method of plastic injection by hand pouring rather than mass injection, allowing “chance” to shape the aesthetic of each individual piece - making each marble like pattern unique and a one off item. This accentuates the raw beauty of the natural colours of recycled plastic, the random and spontaneous way of making, and appreciating any remnants from such material or process.

CHERNG [เฌิง - Pedestal] An upcycle Side Table decor that integrates Thai kitsch aesthetic using deadstock materials
CHERNG is an extension of CHOEI, an art decor that functions as a side table. It is a unique blend of Thai-Chinese design, an assemblage of the CHOEI stool head and ceramic baluster stabilised with a stainless steel base in shape of a flower to add a finishing touch.
Sometimes, when placed in the right context, certain objects can exceed expectations. Imagine if the location of the "Ceramic baluster" were changed from a mere household balcony accessory to a whimsical artwork. CHERNG is designed to retell stories of everyday Thai cultures by adding value to overlooked objects.
Old Thai-style homes cannot achieve completeness without ceramic baluster, although not originated from Thailand, ceramic baluster is another material long familiar to Thais but unfortunately have been deemed outdated. CHERNG aims to transform this familiar but devalued material through isolating it from its original function and representing the baluster through its material’s inherent quality and aesthetic with a new function.
CHERNG is an extension of CHOEI. A product that is passed down from a grandfather to his granddaughter. Born from repurposing two old items into a new display - retaining the originally delicate aesthetic of two outdated parts but refreshed in a fun and playful way.
We had the idea of connecting the CHOEI stool head with a deadstock ceramic baluster, focusing on design and functionality to enhance its beauty and stability. We reinforced the CHERNG's interior structure by laser-cutting stainless steel sheets to form a flower-shaped base, connected to stainless steel rod threads. Then, we encased it with the baluster, finishing it with the CHOEI’s head and adding small flower-shaped stainless steel nuts to close the central hole of the chair.
